PCCVA:
Site of CMM Fundraising
A
fundraising dinner/dance benefitting the
Carolina Medical Mission (CMM) was held at
the Philippine Cultural Center of Virginia (PCCVA).
There were almost 250 community
members who
came to show their support to this mission in
Zambales in 2008.
The
primary players of this mission are Dr. Fred
Ng and his wife Anita Chua-Ng. On their way
out of the PCC that night, I was able to ask
questions about the mission. According to Dr.
Ng, funding is the key to a successful
mission. He said, "We need medicines,
medical equipments, and supplies to support a
high tempo activity in the target area. We do
not turn patients away just because it is
already 12 midnight. Volunteers who join the
mission pay their own expenses and like
everyone else, we do the same."
He
also mentioned that in the year 2000, they
visited San Marcelino, Zambales and did
most
of their work at the town hospital. The
interview was cut short because they were in
a hurry to return to North Carolina that
night to prepare for their trip to China in
ten days. Dr. Ng was invited to give medical
training there and will proceed later to a
remote area in the northern part of China to
join an ongoing medical mission consisting of
international groups.
The
highlights of the evening were:
-
The
moving prayer of Aida Fanugao.
-
Review
of the mission, its goals and
expectations by Dra. Emma Dempsey.
-
Dr.
Manny Hipol, CUFOT Chairman,
welcomed the medical missionaries to the
PCCVA and praised their dedication in
helping the poor and the disadvantaged.
-
The
music and dance performances of the
Dancing DJ, Jesse Farrales and friends.
Also, the solo ballroom dance routine of
husband and wife: Ben and Aida Limcaoco.
-
And
of
course, the many friends who came forward
to help. Food, drinks, talent, and labor were also donated.
Fundraising
is a year round activity because there are
always somebody in need of help. We will
continue to knock on doors and hopefully,
your heart and spirit will remain open for
any good causes that comes your way. As the
saying goes, "Giving is to never expect
anything in return. It comes from the
heart." With that - we thank you very
much. (TOP)

Medical
Mission: Supplies,
Volunteers and Funding Support Needed
The
Carolina Medical Mission will visit San
Narciso, Zambales, Philippines on January 22,
23, 24, 2008. This project is sponsored by
the San Narcisenians of Virginia. Fund
raising activities are ongoing:
a dinner/dance on July 07, 2007 at the
Philippine Cultural Center (PCC),
Atlantic City trips are in the mixed as well.
In one
of their usual meetings at Jesse and Fely
Farrales house, these small group of
enthusiastic individuals behaved like they
have done this sort of thing before.
Asked
why they are doing it, and they replied:
"The Lord has been good to us and it is
time to give something back. It is time to
return to where we came from to help the less
fortunate and the disadvantaged kailian.
The
$10, or the $20 we spent on stuff we do not
really need can go a long way in terms of
medical and dental care for those who have
none. Each day, they pray for answers and
remedies knowing that time will come soon.
They pray to the One who was meant to die for
salvation and peaceful ending. This is a sad
situation, and it should not be because we
can help. We can NOT help everybody, but we
can start.
Our
kailians are in desperate need. Any amount,
change money, or in whatever form of
negotiable instrument is accepted.
Any
help donated in the forms of supplies,
services and funding supports are tax
deductible. For more information, please
call: Aida Fanugao @ 215-4937, Jessie
Farrales @ 476-7913 or Linda Lazo @ 471-5386.

Parents
of the Year - 2007
On
June 2, 2007, the Zambales community honored
their Parents of the Year for 2007. The
deserving awardees were (husband and wife)
Felipe and Anne Cabacoy. Both are Filipino
community activist whose involvement differs
somewhat by their own respective profession.
Anne
is a licensed Registered Nurse in the State
of Virginia and has been a nurse practitioner
since 1983. She is presently employed by
Sentara Norfolk Heart Hospital. Meanwhile,
Felipe with his credentials: a graduate of
the Philippine Maritime Institute, Philippine
Merchant Marine Academy. In 1978, he
immigrated to the United States and resided
in Norfolk, Virginia. Summaries of employers
are: Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Norfolk Sheriff
Dept., and Sentara General Hospital Safety
and Security Division. In his quest for
excellence, he is enrolled at Regent
University College of Law majoring in
Constitutional Law.
Felipe’s
Norfolk years has been community services all
around. An array of titles are: president,
Zambales Association of Tidewater
(1985-1988); Chairman, Fil-Am Community
Action Group; Republican Party Vice Chairman,
Second Congressional District; Chairman, UIAT
Board of Director; Member, Lt. Gov. Bill
Bohling Advisory Board; Member, Advisory and
Commission, Career in Technological
Education, Virginia Assembly; A Governor’s
Appointee as Board Member and Chairman of the
Board of Correctional Education, A Virginia
Board of Public Safety.
The
marriage of Felipe and Anne Cabacoy has
produced two daughters. Stephanie, already a
16 year old, is the oldest and goes to Bishop
Sullivan Catholic High School. The younger of
the two is 12 years old and her name is
Katherine. She attends the Elementary School
of the church of St. Gregory the Great.
In
a household such as theirs, there revolves an
astonishing energy of community commitment,
school as well as church activities. Both
daughters are students of the School of
Creative Arts and Performance Academy
(SCAPA), a cultural orientation program sponsored
by the Philippine Cultural Center of
Virginia. This school produced cultural shows
to validate the students learning abilities
and in many of these functions, parents
served as coordinators, and/or teaching
staffs. This is also true in church
children’s choir and Catholic High School
spring auction.
In
spite of their activitism in so many
community projects over the years, Felipe and
Anne Cabacoy managed to maintain the balance
of their professional, family and personal
commitments. And parenting is one issue they
excel the most. Congratulations!

Happy,
Happy Anniversary!

Shsss!
Did you know Andy and Linda Lazo just
celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary?
Hmmp! Hmmp! Hmmp! I don't like to talk
about it because I am afraid of being accused
of spreading a rumor, but since we are
friends of good standing, I am taking this
liberty to broadcast this wonderful event of
their life. Just promise not to tell anyone,
OK? I would like to call them to wish them
the best, but Andy might think I am inviting
him for a drink. So, I will pretend I called
to tell them that I would like to offer a
toast for their long life and prosperity.

The
Main Event: Party
Time
June
2, 2007 – Virginia Beach, VA:
There is always a special day for all
of us. Our friends and families help us
celebrate that special occasion in our lives.
Yet, there are other special days that we
publicly or privately celebrate. Those days
are created through the many events that give
special meaning in our hearts.
We
in the Zambales Association, Inc. had
something special for our parents. It was a
night on June 2, 2007 that we have given a
sense of value to their sacrifice, honesty
and perseverance. Parenting and household
management is a full time job worthy of the
highest honor. It is also the most commonly
neglected and under appreciated role we play
in our daily activities. But we, Zambaleneos
know better. We honor and respect our parents
because they deserved (at least) a night to
kick back and relax. It is our parents night
– a night to dine, to wine, to dance and
share laughter together in a setting beyond
compare.
This
event in our association is very popular in
the community. Our guest list topped 223
parents who came because they recognized the
importance of family and healthy
relationships in our household.
