Introduction
In
the hidden corners of American society, ethnic
communities grow unnoticed. Each community has its
own lifestyle, culture and history. The beginnings
are alike - immigrants in search of education and
fortune.
In
segments, Filipinos arrived in the United States. A
documented migration dates back to as far as the
18th century. Most took jobs as farm help to escape
the bondage of Spanish rule in the Philippines.
Many sons of the rich Indios were sent to
Europe to further their education. A Philippine
national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was a classic
example of this situation. Many before him ventured
out of the country for the same purpose.

Many
Filipino people became part of the farming
industry in America. They worked in the
sugar and pineapple plantations in Hawaii,
the farm and fruit communities of
California, the tobacco farms of the
Southern States, and the fishing industries
of New England and Alaska.
Then,
war broke out among the nations. There was
World War I, World War II, the Korean War,
and the Vietnam War. These series of events
were instrumental in drawing the best crops
of men and women out of the Philippines.
They served in every capacity available in
all corners of the world.

Filipinos
are regarded as one of the best educated people in
the Far East. Their talent and ingenuity are motors
that make the foreigner's world purr. Their rewards
- the opportunity to live in peace and harmony with
their neighbors. Their children and grand children
are given the best education available in the
world. And because of their hard working habits,
they earned every little things they own. At the
same time, they contributed substantially to
maintain the high standards of living in their own
respective communities.
Truly,
the United States is the melting pot of immigrants
everywhere. Only in America . . . and we are one of
many - we are the Zambaleneos of Hampton Roads!
And
now, we would like to thank you for visiting our
web site. We also would like to invite you to open
the pages of our world, to see for yourself - the
life, the culture, and whatever remain.

About
Us
We
are a group of people from Zambales, a province of
the Republic of the Philippines, who immigrated
into the United States by way of the rules and
regulations mandated by the Congress of the United
States. Our existence in America are mostly
support groups in the fields of science and
technology, in the food and shipping industries, in
the social services, and most of all, in the
armed forces of the United States.
 |
Our
way of life is simple. We belong mostly in the low
to middle class families. Hard work and
perseverance are the driving force that makes us continue
to assert ourselves in the community. Our children
and their children are educated in the best
schools and universities in the country and
they too, are blazing the trail of a new world.
Before
the turn of the century, President William
Jefferson Clinton, in one of his state of the
union address, said, "In the next millennium
America will be a potpourri of the citizens of
the world.” That beginning began many years long
before the Italians and Spaniards immigrated into
the New World. |
The
hurricane of change has separated us from our main
roots in the Philippines. We are now safely
implanted in Hampton Roads and this new
beginning has shown promising roots of change in
culture and lifestyle tainted with beautiful
memories of the past. Those were our customs
and traditions, which every now and then surface to
reveal the color, grace, and life of our very
being. In time, it will diminish as our new roots
begin to explore the area of prosperity and climate
of regeneration.
We
love the United States. We support our leaders who
run our cities, our courts who enforce the laws of
the land, and our police officers who make
sure the law is carried to the limit. We support
our armed forces that enforce the interest of
the United States any where in the world. And with
that interest in place, our economy remains
prosperous. That is our America, with all its
imperfection; it is the home of the free. This is
our chosen home.
This
web site is about us, Filipino immigrants,
weathering the variables of change and life in
America. We are groups of Americans constantly
asserting our existence while refocusing the vision
of our ethnicity and our identity.
