Atlantic
City Trip: Crab Legs and Slots Therapy
May 12,
2007 - It was a beautiful morning to start the day.
The sun peeking through the clouds produced
dimensional rays. It warms the morning dew and
makes it disappear into the gusty wind. The traffic
wasn’t so bad considering it was a Saturday
morning in Hampton Roads. It was about 6:30 a.m.
now, and buses are beginning to arrive for
passengers going to Atlantic City. Our bus, one
contracted by the Zambales Association, Inc. shall
arrive about 7:00 a.m., they said. And scheduled to
depart about 7:30 a.m. at the earliest. In
anticipation for a long journey, many carried
blankets and pillows hoping for long catnaps along
the way. Sponsors were serving hot coffee, pandesal
with a choice of spreads: jam, jelly, peanut
butter, or a combination of any of the three
spreads. There were also sandwiches all ready made
with ham and cheese slices. For those who did not
have time to eat breakfast at home, such service
was a welcome treat on long trips like this one.
The
atmosphere among the passengers emits excitement on
their first trip to Atlantic City. They talked
about slot machines and their hopes of bringing
home millions of dollars. Then, they laugh about
the unrealistic possibilities and follow their
wishes with, “Who knows? Maybe this is my lucky
day.” True or not, we accept what the future
brings.
A rumble
comes along and the bus arrived. Together, we
loaded drinks, snacks, and most importantly, our
lunch for the day. There were goodbyes and good
wishes for happy trips from friends and relatives
who choose to stay in favor of crab legs and slot
games.
In a
short while, we are on our way to the City of Sin.
We got on Interstate 64 and there were hardly any
vehicles on the road. On the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Tunnel, the seagulls were playing the same silly
games – they fly over vehicles and let go of
their loads thereby making a big mess on
windshields and rooftops. The bay is relatively
calm and to no surprise, boaters were out early to
take advantage of the first big bite. It would be
nice to go fishing today, I thought but being on a
bus to Atlantic City would make that thought
wishy-washy.
The
on-the-road activities on the bus had similarities
with previous trips. There were bingo sessions but
different games. Most desired games this time were
black out and picture frame settings. For this
particular group, these games stimulate their
expectations of a good time soon. And there is
nothing wrong dreaming of the beautiful things in
life to have.
On this
trip, three things were certain that day: a buffet
dinner of crab legs, sirloin steaks, $22.00 cash
back, and a long bout with the slot machines. If
you had fun, then the experience is worth the time.
We like to see you again on the next outing. Our
thanks to the trip coordinators: Rey Fanugao, Joe
Aranas, and many others who in one-way or another,
help in making this trip a successful one.

SURPRISE!
SURPRISE!
May 12,
2007 - The mothers who traveled with the group to
Atlantic City were surprised with a red, red rose
from Jun and Bonnie Cachaper upon arrival. It was
the Cachapers way of saying, "Happy Mother's
Day." And one of the Mothers said: "I
lost (buko) money but I am going home with a rose!
Thanks!
That was
very thoughtful of the Cachapers.

Party: Induction and Valentines Ball
February
3, 2007
- This year's party can be credited as one of the
best in Zambales Association, Inc. history. There
was a record attendance of 433 guests registered to
grace
the grand ballroom of the Chesapeake Convention
Center. The kitchen staff must have butchered a
whole cow and a whale to feed this entire group.
There was four wait staff on walkie-talkie
coordinating the serving of dinner entries from
four corners of the grand ballroom. The buckets of
drinks: water, ice tea, and coffee were all in
silver serving containers positioned in strategic
locations around. Not to be out done were the
bartenders who kept serving wine all night.
There
was a live band and a DJ paid to make the best
noise. A deafening sound they produced must have
knockout the lights of the grand ballroom as it was
blinking and winking for a while. That was a small
inconvenience and did not stop the guests from
having a good time.
The
good part of it all: the programme.
An
opening remarks by the Master and Mistress of
Ceremonies: husband and wife, Melchor and Maria
Lazo. Followed by the (Filipino and American)
National Anthems, then the Invocation, Dinner, and
dancing breaks.
Later,
the band stopped playing and it was time for the
outgoing president, Segundo R. Lazo to say
farewell. He delivered a short summary of his
accomplishments as president and credited his
loving wife, Linda Lazo, for masterminding many of
the successful projects during his term. In that
respect, Zambales was very lucky to have the
service of a president with two heads. We can only
appreciate his devotion and total diligence in the
stewardship of his presidency.
Next,
Melchor Lazo introduced the inducting officer, Dr.
Christopher Asuncion. The doctor has been around
and we know he is the husband of Dr. Arlene
Fontanares, so . . . he is a devoted father and a
good man with impeccable credentials.
After
the incoming officers were called out, Dr. Asuncion
proceeded in the induction ceremony. "I, state
your name, . . . so help me God." And it was
over. There were congratulatory handshakes all
around as a prelude leading to the acceptance
speech of the incoming
president: Veneracion Cachaper.
She
said, " I am ready."
With
that, we thank our guests, our entertainers, and
everyone connected in putting this party together.
We also like to wish the incoming Mrs.
Valentines, Mrs. Kintanar, a most rewarding
year.

Christmas Party: It was like no other
December
2006 - The party was a little too much of
everything. Namely: too much eating, too much
dancing, too much singing, too much laughing, and
too many faces to remember. Whew! Ooh, yes! The
garbage also was too much. Only the Zambaleneos can
assemble a group so positive in response and so
ready to share the moment of fun with children,
grandchildren, mother, father, grandparents and
many friends of long ago who came from near and
far.
That
party was something else. It was sharing all around
at its best! Note it as moments to file away for
future remembering.
