Fil-Am Friendship Day -
The Day After
July 2, 2007

Redwing Park, Virginia Beach, VA - The day after is just as beautiful as the day before. Yes, this is a day to re-visit the scene of a historic day in the life of the many Filipino Americans who came to celebrate the Fil-Am Friendship Day. The number of visitors - (Phews!) I believe we stopped counting a few years back.

Left to Right: Mila Raganit, Bonnie Cachaper, Virginia Beach Councilman Ron Villanueva and Mike ColoradoThis is a celebration supported by the leadership of business and city government. It is people inter-acting in the most positive way imaginable in a city like Virginia Beach. Such behavior could become a pattern in every community in the United States and we are proud to say: "The homeboys started it."

The leadership of Joseph Ortega and his committee made it all possible. To name the supporting cast would not be fair because everyone in the park that day are all players in this occasion. We, the people always make it possible for leaders to look good and make them feel they have done a good job. We appreciate their activism, their desire to serve and their willingness to share their little time with their fellow taglishmen.

Anymore word to describe the event? None. The celebration speak for itself. Thank you for a wonderful day.

Fil-Am Friendship Day
Saturday, July 01, 2007
Red Wing Park, Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, VA - The site of this annual event is at Red Wing Park. Expecting to attend this all day affair are three generations of Filipino-Americans residing in the Metropolitan area of Hampton Roads. This Metropolis includes the cities of Suffolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth, and Newport News. The cities of Williamsburg all the way up north to Richmond are not a part of this conglomerate, but there are many from this region that are expected to attend.

As always, the grills will be on fire for burgers, hotdogs, barbecue chicken, pork, or beef. The aroma of a big cookout will be in the air all day and it will be felt for miles and miles away. This gathering would be like those of Chief Geronimo's big canyao in the Wild West.

What is the big deal? Well, the Filipino people by nature are friendly. They come to see and be seen, to renew old acquaintances and to cement a life long friendship. These are more important than barbecue and saloyut. We are talking about a friendship that is imbedded in the heart and it is carried no matter where we are.

Show up early if you want to get a parking space in the park. You cannot just park anywhere. A parking ticket will be issued and it is very expensive. Better still, think carpooling ,save gas and go to the park like the Mayberrys of old.

Whatever you are going to do, have fun and be extra careful. If you are on medication, talk to your doctor before going. There is nothing like being safe than sorry. We want you to tell us about your day in the park and how tasty the American hamburger is. Adobo and lumpia are just as tasty if you want to go the native ways.

Please enjoy the Fil-Am Friendship Day.
